Marisol

UNM’s Department of Theatre and Dance opens its 2006 Theatre X season with Jose Rivera's stunning work of magic realism, Marisol, a story of Armageddon in the heavens and Apocalypse on earth seen through the eyes of Marisol Perez, an Everywoman on a journey through a surrealistic Bronx. This award-winning drama pins the destiny of our planet on the outcome of revolution or renewal.

The Caminos series will explore the incredibly diverse Latino playwright's voice. This fall semester UNM students will perform staged readings of historic works from Valdez to Fornes as well as newer works by emerging playwrights.

And Baby Makes Seven

And Baby Makes Seven is a lighthearted workby the Pulitzer-Prize winning playwright Paula Vogel. This quirky allegory follows the struggle to find the balance between the reality of parenthood and fantasy of childhood. Although Anna is the expectant mother of her gay roommate Peter’s child, she and her lesbian lover Ruth are living half of their lives as fantasy child characters; Cecil the boy genius, Henri a French troublemaker, and Orphan who was raised by wild dogs. With the arrival of the baby nearing, Peter requests that the “children” go away, in hopes of a more normal life for the family.

Candide

The World Premiere Adaptation of Voltaire’s Classic Novel

Tricklock Company’s debut production in residency at UNM

Tricklock Theatre Company presents its first collaboration with the University of New Mexico’s Department of Theatre and Dance, as UNM’s first Theatre Company-in-Residence, with the World Premiere of Candide, conceived and developed by Joe Feldman and Tricklock Artistic Director Joe Peracchio, script and direction by Joe Feldman, and produced by Joe Peracchio. In this ambitious new musical adaptation featuring Tricklock Company members and UNM Theatre and Dance students, the young Candide and his tutor, Pangloss, travel from the old world to the new, through all times and no time, and even into space. They encounter kings and beggars, mermaids and truckstop managers, priests and cabdrivers, along their journey of discovery.

Fat Men In Skirts

Commit yourself and enter the twisted world of Bishop Hogan, where the line between reality and delusional fantasy becomes increasingly hard to distinguish. After Bishop and his mother 's plane crashes on a deserted island, leaving them stranded for five years, they return to civilized society where they struggle to re-acclimate to their normal lives. When they are reunited with husband Howard Hogan (who has moved on with life with a sexy girlfriend) will the primal instincts of the island overtake them? Follow Bishop's journey from the island to the mainland to the mental institution in this seriously dark, seriously disturbing, seriously funny comedy.

Words Afire 2006: A Festival of New Works

21 Plays in 21 Days

The Words Afire Festival features world premiere productions written, directed, acted and designed by emerging student artists.  On average more than 100 students participate in the festival each year.  This November, the Words Afire Festival will present works that include 5 world premieres of full-length plays by MFA students, an evening of 8 short plays, 2 one-acts, 3 staged readings and a special event in Rodey Theater - a staged reading of a new radio play by our featured guest artist, Elana Greenfield.  In addition to the 21 new plays, the festival features a kickoff party in Rodey Theater and an evening of staged readings of new, short screenplays.
Audience members who attend these world premiere productions have the opportunity to
experience some of the hottest new plays and emerging writing talent in the country!

Sustenance

An MFA Dissertation Concert
Featuring the choreography of Jeanne Snodgrass

Dance and discourse:  feed your mind, feed your body, feed your soul. Sustenance is a presentation of three new works that explore various social topics through the art of modern dance. These works incorporate strong physicality, text and digital images as they seek to engage the audience in dialogue about perceptions of beauty, definitions of family and the decline of family farms. Sustenance features the choreography of MFA candidate Jeanne Snodgrass and the dancing of UNM Dance Program students.

Student Choreography Showcase

The talent and vibrancy of young choreographers in the dance program at UNM are highlighted in this unique concert of curated student works for the stage. Humor and drama combine with athleticism and movement aesthetics to create an evening of varied entertainment, a place where
student artists take risks, interweaving their discipline and craft with inspiration and vision.
