High School Festivals

Schedules allowing, the Department produces two festivals for high school students and teachers:  The Southwest High School Theatre Festival and the Southwest High School Dance Festival.

For the 2008-2009 season, we are piloting a new way of producing the festivals.  In collaboration with Albuquerque’s Blackout Theatre Company, we have developed the Portable Festival.  This festival will bring teaching artists from the Department of Theatre and Dance and Blackout Theatre to high schools around the state for a day long event.  They will teach workshops in all aspects of theatre and/or give feedback on productions.  For those schools interested in dance, the Portable Festival can include classes in modern, flamenco, or hip-hop. This amazingly flexible format will allow drama teachers to structure the festival to meet the particular needs of their students while saving the expense of traveling to UNM.  The Portable Festival will be available for booking throughout Spring Semester 2009, and can be booked for weekdays or for a Saturday. The Portable Festival is funded in part by the College of Fine Arts Outreach Office.
