Letter from the Chair

Dear Students, Alumni, and Friends:

Welcome to the Department of Theatre and Dance in the College of Fine Arts at the University of New Mexico. We provide comprehensive training in theatre, dance, and design.  Here you will find information about all our degree programs at both the undergraduate and graduate level. You will also find information about our production season, and our innovative community engagement initiatives, and our exciting new relationship with Tricklock Theatre Company as our partner and resident professional theatre company.

As many of you already know, UNM is located in Albuquerque in the midst of dramatic high desert and mountain landscapes, and enjoys a vibrantly multi-cultural heritage. Native American, Hispano, Chicano, and Latino cultures enrich our communities and our practices. Now, alongside ancient traditions, the film industry and digital arts are burgeoning and all these energies are generating exciting changes in the department.

Amidst these changes, we remain dedicated to prepare students to enter the world of theatre, dance and design with comprehensive training that combines theory and production practice.  We strive to create a stimulating arts atmosphere that crosses cultural and disciplinary borders, respects differences, and connects with the larger world, including film, media, and digital arts. Our goals are to:

• develop emerging artists and further their careers
• help all our students expand their creativity and aesthetic awareness
• collaborate with the community to explore the issues of our lives and times
