Ten Tips for Academic Success

  1. Pay attention to location. To get work done, find a place where you will not be distracted. Schedule quiet time with roommates, use libraries or empty classrooms

  2. Work everyday. Avoid all night cram sessions. Use small blocks of time to accomplish any goal.

  3. Get help - it exists. Take advantage of the services that you pay for with your tuition dollars. CASA has study groups, math hotline, individual tutoring, and mini-workshops available throughout the semester. And please have the link to the homepage be triggered for "individual tutoring"

  4. Write down important dates. It is your responsibility to remember due-dates. Keep a planner to organize the due-dates of assignments. A wall calendar is also a good idea.

  5. Keep your energy up. Comprehension and memory are affected by stress and fatigue. Eat well, exercise, and get plenty of rest.

  6. Go to class prepared. DON'T MISS CLASS. Someone else's notes are not as beneficial as your own. Take good notes. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Take advantage of the professor's office hours if you have additional questions. Don't be afraid to speak up and ask questions if you don't understand something.

  7. Follow the syllabus. Review lecture notes thoroughly after each class. Don't fall behind on reading textbook reading; chances are you could be missing out on useful information.

  8. Explore creative ways to remember. Create mnemonics (making associations to aid in memory) such as:
    Please ---- Parentheses
    Excuse----Exponents
    My----Multiplication
    Dear----Division
    Aunt----Add
    Sally----Subtract
PEMDAS is an easy way to remember the order of operations in mathematics. But be careful not to overuse mnemonics. You might spend too much time remembering the mnemonics and too little time understanding the material!

  9. Practice. Without practice and repetition forgetting will occur. Prior to taking the tests, recall information without looking at your notes. If you need to remember mathematical formulas, write them down in the margin before beginning the test.

  10. Time to take the test. Read instructions carefully, don't run out of time, and do less difficult questions first to build confidence
