In keeping with the trend toward a greener UNM, President Schmidly recently signed the  Sustainability Policy for the campus.  According to the Web page of the UNM Policy Office, “The policy was developed by a Provost-appointed task force composed of students, faculty, and staff to make recommendations on the best course of action for UNM in developing a Sustainability Initiative that addresses the three major components of sustainability:  environment, economic, and social responsibility often referred to as the triple bottom line.”  The policy adheres to the criteria used by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education.  Based on the principle of holism, where the system as a whole determines in an important way how the parts behave, the policy addresses criteria of Governance, Operations, Curriculum & Research, and Community service.  Under each criterion, the policy addresses the triple bottom line of sustainability: people, planet, and profit.  Ongoing work by the Sustainability Committee includes a Carbon-neutrality Task Force which is

considering innovative ways to achieve policy goals.
