Housing FAQs for Parents

What Activites Can Student Do?
The Residence Hall Association, building and complex Community Associations and individual Resident Advisors organize many different types of social and educational programs throughout the year for your child to participate in including activities that take place on and off campus. In addition, a student recreation and programming area known as “The Cellar” is open 7 nights per week with pool, ping-pong, air hockey, foosball, an arcade game system, study booths and discounted snacks.
If a resident ever says they are bored, ask them, “Have you talked to your RA to see what’s going on?”

What if I have trouble getting in touch with a resident?

Remember, there are a lot of activities that take place in the residence halls and it is not unusual for your child to be more busy than normal and take longer to return a phone call. If you feel that there is a real concern about not hearing from your student, contact the Residence Life Office at (505) 277-8230.

Do residents need a computer?

While many students find it convenient to have their own computer in their room or personal laptop, there is a 24-hour computer pod located within the Student Residence Center Commons Building with free printing as well as stand up email terminals in the mailroom. The entire residence hall system has wireless computer access!

What if a resident is not getting a long with his/her roommate? Is it possible for them to change rooms?

Residents should first try to discuss issues with their roommates, suitemates and apartmentmates to clear up misperceptions, misunderstandings and differing expectations. In apartment style residence halls, residents will complete an apartment agreement to establish common ground and expectations. Residents should also work with their Resident Advisor who has been trained to help mediate conflicts. Before changing roommates, we encourage residents first to review How to Get Along.

If the differences are irreconcilable, residents can go to the front desk and ask for a Room Change Request Form. Upon filling it out and turning it in to their front desk, depending on availability of space and unoccupied rooms, room changes will be granted by the Area Coordinator or Student Head Resident. Approval notices will be sent to the resident’s mailbox. Residents should only move after they receive the approval notice.

What if a resident is moving out before the academic year ends?

Housing contracts are for the academic year. The monthly housing payments are not like rent. If a resident moves out before the end of the academic year, they will still be responsible for additional payments per the housing contract release rates. Residents should contact Housing Reservations for a contract release and instructions.

What kind of safety and security procedures are in the residence halls?

All residence hall perimeter doors are locked 24-7 and all resident rooms have locking doors. There is a Resident Advisor on duty for each building or complex each night and residence hall security is always on-duty. They do rounds throughout the halls and are available to provide escorts to residents. There are also emergency call boxes located in each residence hall, as well as call box stations intermittently throughout campus. In addition the SRC front desk is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week to assist residents with any questions they may have and the University Police Department is located adjacent to the residence halls.

Are the residence halls open for Fall Break, Winter Recess, and Spring Break?

The residence halls are open for Fall and Spring Breaks. For the Winter Recess, only the SRC apartments and Redondo Village Apartments are open. The rest of the halls are closed and locked. If a resident needs to stay during the winter recess, they can buy an intersession contract through the housing department and temporarily relocate to an apartment style residence hall.

What if a resident in a double room looses their roommate?

Occasionally a resident may find themselves in double room with no roommate. If this occurs, they'll be given three options. They will be sent a “Consolidation Notice” by the Residence Life Supervisor for their area that outlines the choices:

  • Option 1 Double-as-Single Charges - Remaining in your current room as space permits and paying the double as a single rate of $______ per contractual week, effective the “declared date” listed on the notice.
  • Option 2 Self Consolidation - Consolidating in a double room with a new mutually requested roommate. This can be in your current room or in the other person’s room. This must be completed within 15 days of the “declared date” on the notice or double as single charges will commence.
  • Option 3 Administrative Reassignment - Requesting to be reassigned by the Residence Life Office. Residence Life will determine whether you are assigned to a new room or receive a new roommate. Priority is determined by the housing contract sequence number and may require moving to a new room in another building. If assignment is refused, double as a single charges will be effective the “declared date” listed on the notice.

The resident must choose an option and return the completed form to their residence hall front desk. The consolidation process must be Complete within 15 Days of the “Declared Date” listed on the notice. If the form is not returned, the process will default to Option 1 and charges will commence.

Most importantly, the residents should not ignore the notice. If they have any questions or if they change their mind about the option they selected, they should contact the Residence Life Supervisor for their area who sent them the form through their front desk.
