One of Your First Decisions

Having decided to attend UNM, you have several choices about where to live:

  • on-campus in the residence halls
  • near campus in a sorority or fraternity or small co-op residence
  • off-campus in an apartment or shared home
  • at home as a commuter

We encourage you to spend at least a year in the residence halls if at all possible. If you do, you'll:

  • enjoy many benefits of living on campus
  • find it easier to transition to college life
  • find it easier to make friends who share your interests
  • find it easier to meet students whose life experience is very different from yours
  • enjoy access to a real community of activities, organizations, and interests
  • experience personal growth with opportunities to gain independence and display leadership
  • on average, have a higher grade point in your studies
  • on average, graduate faster than other students
  • find it more convenient and less expensive than living in an apartment
  • learn to live with others in a cooperative fashion
If costs are a concern, talk to us about financial aid. You may be able to offset costs by working in the residence halls, with conference services, with dining services, or elsewhere on campus.

"I like it. Fell in love with it my first year. It’s just a really great, social place."
I. Tom, Hokona, Class of 2008
