Q: What is Resnet?
A: Resnet is a department of UNM's Housing & Food Services Division. We provide support for the residential network as well as provide support for students using the housing ethernet and wireless network. If you are a resident with a computer problem you are in the right place!
Q: What are the minimum requirements for using the UNM network?
A: First and most importantly, you need to have your own computer. If you are running a windows/Linux machine CPU: 233 Mhz minimum Operating System: Windows 2000, XP home/Professional, Vista, MAC OSX, or any Linux distribution that supports dynamic ip addressing.
Attention: Usually newer computers (3 years old or newer) are Network/Internet ready with an onboard Ethernet card. If you are unsure, please refrain from buying newer equipment until you arrive on campus and we will be glad to check for you.
Q: What do I need to get connected?
A: In order to connect to our network you must meet the meet the minimum requirements. Make sure that you have the following: Ethernet card, Ethernet cable, a computer, anti-virus software installed, and the latest Windows, MacOS, or Linux updates. That's it!
Q: Where do I find an ethernet cable?
A: You can buy a ethernet/network cable from many diffrent retailers such as Walmart, Radio Shack, and even the UNM Bookstore!
Q: How do I connect to the network?
A: Once you have all required components to connect just plug one end of the Ethernet cable into the data port (not the phone port; the data port is a bit larger than a standard phone port) in your dorm room, and the other end into the network card on your computer. Turn your computer on, make sure your network settings are set to DHCP, open up Internet explorer (or preferred browser), and browse!
Q: What if I already have an IP address from my last school or home?
A: Here at UNM we use dynamic network addressing. You DON'T need a static IP address. Just set your settings to use DHCP (automatically detect IP address and automatically detect DNS server) under network properties.
Q: I have a network problem. Who can help?
A: Resnet will provide priority technical support, as long as you are in the Residence Halls. This technical support is not limited to just phone calls, but good old-fashioned house calls, where we will come to you to fix any problems with your network interface card or help with virus/spyware/malware removal.
Q: What are IP numbers and MAC Addresses?
A: An IP number is a method of identifying your computer to the world and to let the world know where to send any information you have requested. They look like this: 10.106.1.24. It is kind of like a Phone Number for your computer. A MAC address identifies your computer on the network. It is like an IP number, but is specific to your network interface card (NIC). MACs appear something in the form: 00 f3 ca dd 65 9e. This can also be known as a physical address.
Q: What if I have a laptop computer?
A: We support laptops in the same fashion as desktops; the added benefit of laptops it is easyer to drop them into our office for support.
Q:What about Wireless?
A: We have wireless too! UNM ITS and UNM Housing have partnered to bring the same wireless network found all over the campus to the residence halls.
Q:Where will we pick up Wireless?
A:Currently, there are over fifty wireless access points in the residence halls. While all buildings have access points, not all rooms receive wireless coverage. For additional hot spots contact CIRT.
Q: How do I get a hold of Resnet?
A: Call our Tech Support Number (505) 277 9221 during normal business hours (Mon. - Fri.) or, you could always stop by our office next to the SRC Computer Pod in room 211. If you are having any other problems with UNM Computing, you might want to try the CIRT Help Desk @ 7-4848 (24 hours a day).
