Basic Policies & Expectations
By signing a UNM housing contract, you agree to follow all national, state and local laws, as well as University regulations and Residence Hall Policies. If you have any questions about policies,please contact a residence hall staff member. You can see the handbook online, or request copies from the Residence Life Office in the SRC Commons Building.
You must agree to the following guidelines while living in a residence hall:
- Not to gamble
- Not to possess or use illegal drugs
- Not to tamper with fire equipment
- Not to possess or use alcohol (regardless of age)
- Not to possess firearms or other potential weapons
- Not to keep any pets except fish in a 15 gallon tank or less
- Not to possess or use microwave ovens or other cooking devices (except in SRC, or other approved rooming arrangements)
- Not to use outside aerials, antennas, or satellite dishes
- Not to possess water beds
- Not to occupy any roof or balcony
- Not to tamper with hall security equipment including locks, call boxes, and fire sprinkler systems
- Not to loan out or duplicate University keys
- Not to possess or use candles
- Not to burn incense
- Other items as provided by RAs or in the Handbook.
Rules for Living Together
- Noise: Minimum quiet hours are from10:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 12:00 midnight to 10:00 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Courtesy hours are expected at all times. No amplified noise should be heard in the hallways or in other resident's rooms.
- Cleanliness: Residents are expected to maintain their living area at a level of sanitation acceptable for a group living environment.
- Guests: Residents are responsible for their guestas'behavior. Overnight guests of the same gender are allowed for up to three days. In the SRC & RVA, residents must complete a Guest Registration Form for all overnight guests.
- Visitation: Men and women may visit each other on a 24-hour, unescorted basis.
- Salesmen: Door-to-door salesman are never permitted in the Residence Halls, including the SRC. To avoid fraud, never buy anything from door-to-door salesmen and call your front desk or the RA on duty to report the activity.
- Keys: If keys are lost or stolen, locks will be changed and the responsible resident's account will be billed. For keys that are misplaced, residents may sign out a temporary set of keys for up to 72 hours. After that, the locks will be changed. Residents can sign out keys or be let into their room by duty RA's four times per semester for free. After the fourth occasion, residents agree to be billed $10 for each lockout.
- Smoking: All residence halls are smoke free.
