Lifestyle Options

The UNM Residence Halls offer a wide variety of accommodationsto meet your lifestyle choices. From apartments to suites totraditional halls, you'll find a housing option that suits you:

  • Apartment Style: 4-6 single bedrooms sharing kitchen, living area and bath
  • Suite Style: 2 doubles & 1 single sharing study area and bath
  • Double: Traditional 2-occupant room
  • Single: Traditional 1-occupant room
  • Deluxe Single: Extra large single room, with easy chair and microwave/fridge combo

Even if you're used to having a room of your own at home, you may find that sharing a room or a suite makes it easier to meet friends and have someone to enjoy new experiences with. For others, especially sophomores and up, a more expensive single room, makes it easier to study.

Living cooperatively with others is a learned skill! Suites and apartments are a good exercise in distributing responsibilities and negotiating lifestyles. In fact, you'll be asked to work out an agreement about expectations and "who does what" with your apartment mates at the beginning of the term.

For some, apartments and suites are great practice for the real world; for others, they're a hassle.

The secret to selecting a good living arrangement is to know yourself, your budget, and your lifestyle.

  • How flexible are you?
  • How neat are you?
  • Do you need quiet to study, or do you like noise?
  • Are you an introvert or an extrovert? A social butterfly or a video game addict?
  • Are you a night owl or a morning dove?
  • How are you at setting boundaries, or saying "no"?
  • How much privacy and individual "down time" do you need?
  • How tolerant are you of people whose likes and dislikes differ?

There are no right or wrong answers. Everyone has his or her own needs and quirks.
