The Department of Communication and Journalism at the University of New Mexico enjoys a national reputation for providing a balanced, quality graduate program leading to master's or doctoral degrees in Communication. Typically 70 students are enrolled in the program at any one time (40 Masters and 30 Doctoral), with an average seminar size of 12-15. Many M.A. graduates enter or return to professions in business, the mass media, research, education, and other fields. Other M.A. graduates enter doctoral programs. The M.A. program is offered under either a thesis or project plan of study. The Ph.D. program stresses intercultural communication and is designed to prepare individuals for university teaching or research positions.
Areas of Study: Students work closely with faculty advisors to design a program of study suitable to their interests and goals. While completing core courses in communication theory and research methodology, students concentrate their studies in one or two of the following areas:

• Intercultural Communication: The study of communication among individuals of different cultural backgrounds.
• Interpersonal Communication: The study of the dynamics of interaction and relationships between individuals and in small groups, as well as the study of communication behaviors and their impact on personal relationships.
• Mass Communication: The structure, practice, social impact, and criticism of the mass media.
• Organizational Communication: The study of how communication functions in complex organizations and how that communication affects organizational processes.
• Rhetorical Communication: The study of principles and frameworks that explain communication options and strategies, such as argumentation and persuasion.
