Submission Guidelines PDF Print E-mail

These guidelines are also printed on the back side of Conceptions Southwest submission forms, which are available in the Daily Lobo Classifieds Office (Marron Hall 107). 

Who can submit
All contributors must be UNM students (including undergraduate, graduate, professional, non-traditional, and continuing education), alumni, faculty, or staff.

What to submit
Conceptions Southwest accepts submissions for publication in the following categories:

          • Fiction:   Short fiction or excerpts from longer works, no longer than 5,000 words each
    • Non-Fiction:  Short memoirs, personal essays, literary journalism, etc. or excerpts from longer works, no longer than 5,000 words each. Please see "A Note on Essays" below.
  • Poetry:   Any style, no longer than 5,000 words each
      • Photography:   Black and white, color, digital, etc.
  • Visual Art:   Two-dimensional works (paintings, drawings, digital art, prints, etc.), or photographs of three-dimensional works (sculptures, models, jewelry, installation pieces, etc.). Comic art must be no longer than one page.
  • Scripts:   Works for stage or screen, including monologues, short plays, short screenplays, or excerpts from longer works, no longer than 5,000 words each
  • Music:   Sheet music, with or without lyrics, no longer than 5 pages each
  • Architecture:   Reproductions of models, drawings, or digital renderings (2-D drawings, 3-D illustrations, digital renderings, digital photographs of analog models) Please do not submit analog models or drawings.

Text submissions may be in English or Spanish, and works in other languages will be considered.

Visual submissions may be in color or black and white, but much of the artwork appearing in the magazine will be printed in black and white.

We will not accept previously published works or simultaneous submissions.

All works must be titled. “Untitled” is not an acceptable title.

A Note on Essays
Conceptions Southwest does not publish academic essays, including research papers, literary analyses, and other scholarly papers you might write for a class. However, there is a way to get your exemplary essays published. Best Student Essays, or BSE, is a twice-yearly magazine that showcases the best of academic writing at UNM. How to submit
Please follow these guidelines to make sure that Conceptions Southwest can consider your work for publication. Any works not adhering to these guidelines may be disqualified. 

  • A completed Conceptions Southwest submission form must accompany all submissions.
  • Submissions are limited to 5 works per person in any category or combination of categories. (Example: 5 poems, or 2 poems, 1 photograph, and 2 scripts)
  • Do not include your name anywhere on any submissions, ONLY on the submission form.
  • All submissions must include a hard copy and an electronic copy:
  1. Text submissions must be typed, double-spaced, with page numbers and title. Submit works on CD or floppy disk in MS Word (IBM/PC format), as well as in hard copy.   
  2. Visual submissions must be on CD or IBM/PC format floppy disk as .gif, .jpg, or .tif format files (minimum 300 dpi), as well as in hard copy as prints or slides. Any accompanying text must be typed and double-spaced. Include the title on each work.  
  3. Architecture submissions must be 2-D drawings, 3-D illustrations, digital renderings, or digital photographs of analog models, on CD as .tif format files (minimum 300 dpi). Please do not submit analog models or drawings.
  • Do not submit your original or your only copy of any works.
  • Please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope for notification of acceptance or rejection.
