Faculty Positions
The University of New Mexico Department of Chemical and Nuclear Engineering, and the Center for Biomedical Engineering, seek an individual to fill a probationary appointment leading to a tenure decision in chemical engineering at the ASSISTANT OR ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR level to augment and strengthen its commitment to excellence in teaching and research in areas related to biomedical engineering. The University of New Mexico (UNM), the flagship institution of higher learning in the State of New Mexico, is a Carnegie Doctoral Research Institution with Very High Research Activity and a Minority and Hispanic-Serving Institution. The Department has a variety of established research programs related to bioengineering. These include biomaterials, bioanalytical micro- and nanosystems, tissue engineering, bioelectrocatalysis, biointerfacial phenomena, optics and spectroscopy. Examples of new areas that would complement existing strengths in bioengineering include, but are not limited to protein engineering, directed evolution, combinatorial biomolecular synthesis, biomolecular separations and analysis, and quantitative analysis of cellular systems, including systems biology and biocontrols. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in bioengineering, chemical engineering or a closely related field. Successful applicants should have a demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching undergraduate and graduate classes, and for developing an outstanding research program in one or more of the research areas mentioned above or other closely related areas. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and a proactive commitment to diversity are also highly desired. The Department has long standing ABET-accredited B.S. degree programs and offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees with strong involvement of graduate and undergraduate students in ongoing research projects. Sponsored research expenditures within the Department and Center exceeded $5.4M in 2006. They enjoy extensive interaction and research collaboration with various departments, research centers and institutes in and outside the University, including the School of Medicine at UNM. Faculty have extensive collaborations with Sandia National Laboratories, Los Alamos National Laboratory, DOE Center for Integrated Nano-Technologies and industries, both locally and nationally, on sponsored research and joint funding opportunities.
