This topics class will explore many facets of the this field through lectures, readings, and participation of outside speakers from the game community. During the semester students will form interdisciplinary teams that will develop project proposals. These proposals can take the form of business plans for new ventures, proposals for a new game application, or use of game technology to solve a particular problem. We expect that most students will continue on to the next semester which will focus on the development of the projects proposed in this course. Feel free to check out the class. It meets on Tuesdays at the ECE building, in room 210. Class starts at 11am and lasts an hour. http://artslab.unm.edu/games/index.htm

iDevGames, a group solely dedicated to bringing original games to the Mac platform, has announced the features of its 2005 contest. Every year iDevGames starts a contest called uDevGames, where independent game developers have around two months to create a game. After which time they are released to a voting public for a week. The entries that qualify go through to be judged by a panel of 4-6 nominated judges with expertise in game creation. This year, the event organisers have announced a special partnership with Freeverse Software. The first prize for the "OMG Cup" (OMG = Original Mac Games) will be a contract with Freeverse to get your game turned into a final product and published. This year’s uDevGame contest will surely be a heated one with the announcement of such an attractive prize. To all the Mac gamers out there; get your developing gloves on! http://idevgames.com/index.php/contest/omg_info/omg_cup_2005

iDevGames, a group solely dedicated to bringing original games to the Mac platform, has announced the features of its 2005 contest.

Technology Ventures Corporation (TVC), a no-cost, non-profit technology commercialization and entrepreneurial assistance organization, hosts its annual Equity Capital Symposium (ECS) in Albuquerque every May. During the event, entrepreneurs have the opportunity to present their business case to an audience of investors. Each selected ECS presenter is assigned a volunteer advisory group of seasoned business professionals from the community. The advisors remain with the presenter through the symposium and provide crucial assistance with preparation of the business plan, presentation, elevator pitch and much more. This event is open to all technology entrepreneurs with emphasis on those with connections to a national laboratory. Business plans will be accepted for inclusion in ECS through January 2006. At Innovators’ Forum, three successful entrepreneurs, all of whom have participated in the Equity Capital Symposium, will share their experiences preparing for and presenting at ECS. The participants are: Molly Cernicek, LANL employee and now VP of Marketing and Business Development for Volius, a Los Alamos based fiber laser manufacturer for the materials processing industry Ben Warner, founder of Caldera Pharmaceuticals, a recently funded biotechnology company based on a technology Warner developed while at LANL Jim McDonald, President of Doxcelerate, a Los Alamos based company that provides complex policy and procedure automation solutions Preparing for any presentation to the investment community takes a lot of work and dedication. This entrepreneurial panel will provide insight into how to approach and present to the investment community, how to develop your business plan and how to leverage the resources available to New Mexico entrepreneurs. What is Innovators’ Forum? Entrepreneurs are the critical force behind innovation and new wealth creation in tech-based economies. Innovators’ Forum is a new, monthly event dedicated to fostering the entrepreneurial spirit in Northern New Mexico. Our mission is to provide innovators with a networking opportunity and fresh insights into the world of start-ups, spin-offs and the management of small, technology businesses.

The Art, Research, Technology, and Science Laboratory (ARTS Lab) is planning a full day conference for UNM faculty on Friday October 21 in SUB Ballroom B. Not only will the conference be a way for the faculty to find out about the ARTS Lab and how you can get involved, it will be an opportunity for us to find out how you think ARTS Lab can further the educational and research goals of the faculty. We would be delighted if you could participate. The morning will include an introduction to the ARTS Lab and some of its projects and will feature a talk by Ken Perlin, director of NYU's Media Research Laboratory (and Academy Award Winner for Technical Achievement). The afternoon will be split between two interdisciplinary workshops, one on media-related research and the other on curricular impacts of media and the ARTS Lab. As you may know, UNM's new ARTS Lab is a key part of the Governor's Media Industries Strategic Project and received $3M of seed funding from the legislature. Among our present activities is the building of the "Garage," a unique interdisciplinary space that will be shared with the Center for High Performance Computing in the Galles Building. Garage features include a black box experimental studio, rendering and animation hardware and software, a motion capture system, and an experimental multi-projector dome. More information can be found on our web site http://artslab.unm.edu . The day’s schedule is attached and faculty can register online at: http://artslab.unm.edu/registration . For further information, you can contact me (angel@cs.unm.edu, 277-2186) or Eric Whitmore, our program coordinator (277-2253, whitmore@unm.edu). Sincerely, Ed Angel Professor of Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Media Arts Director, ARTS Lab
