American Indian Heritage Month (11/23/09 – 11/25/09)
UNM’s American Indian Student Services, Native American Studies, and several chartered student organizations have collaborated to engage the university community in learning and discovering more about the Indigenous experience and perspective. The entire campus community is invited to attend and participate in a variety of public and cost-free educational, social, cultural, and artistic programming initiatives throughout the month of November.

- Tuesday: AIBL Red Tuesday Indian Market from 9am – 4pm in SUB Ballroom B.

Secret Santa Gift Exchange Sign-up Deadline: Wednesday, November 25, 2009
American Indian Student Services is conducting a Secret Santa Gift Exchange in conjunction with a Holiday Social on Friday, December 11, 2009. Those choosing to participate in the gift exchange will receive a gift from a fellow participant and, in turn, will also give a gift to a fellow participant.
Participation in the Secret Santa Gift Exchange is voluntary – individuals interested in participating in the gift exchange must fill out a “Secret Santa Gift Exchange” form. Forms are available at AISS (1119 Mesa Vista Hall). All forms must be completed and returned to AISS by 5 PM on Wednesday, November 25, 2009.
All matches will be made randomly and participants will be informed of the name of the participant they will be purchasing a gift for on Monday, November 30, 2009. All gifts must be brought to the Holiday Social on Friday, December 11, 2009 where the exchange will take place. We hope that you will choose to participate!!!!

The Scholarship Program awards eighty $5,000 merit-based scholarships for college sophomores and juniors seeking a career in tribal health, tribal public policy or the environment. Scholarship recipients participate in a five-day Orientation in Tucson, AZ to learn more about tribal and environmental issues. Applications must be submitted through a Udall Faculty Representative at the student’s college or university. More information about Faculty Representatives can be found on the Udall website.

- Francis Abeyta Scholarship
Applications for the Francis Abeyta Scholarship are now available at AISS (1119 Mesa Vista Hall). Students interested in applying for the award must be Santa Fe Indian School graduates who are currently at sophomore, junior, or senior status at UNM. Deadline to submit a completed application packet is Friday, December 18, 2009.
- Morris K. Udall Native American Congressional Internship
The Morris K. Udall Native American Congressional Internship program is a fully-funded ten-week summer internship in Washington, DC, for Native American and Alaska Native undergraduate, graduate and law students. Interns work in congressional and agency offices where they have opportunities to research legislative issues important to tribal communities, network with public officials and tribal advocacy groups, and enhance their understanding of nation-building and tribal self-governance. The Foundation provides airfare, housing, per diem, and a $1,200 educational stipend. Applications must be received by Friday, January 29, 2010.

Graduate Horizons 2010 at Arizona State University
Graduate Horizons is a four-day “crash course” in preparing for graduate school (masters/doctorate programs) and professional schools. Faculty admissions officers and deans from 40 graduate and professional schools and representing hundreds of graduate disciplines will help students:

- Complete quality applications and resumes
- Write effective statements of purpose and memorable personal statements

UNM MARC (Minority Access to Research Careers) Program
Program Componets:
- Carry out an independent biomedical research project for two years under the mentorship of a faculty member in Department of your choice
- Conduct summer research outside of New Mexico
- Present research at local and national scientific meetings
- Be prepared to succeed in graduate school
- Advisement to ensure you are on track for timely graduation and post-graduate plans
- Participate in seminars, a Graduate Record Exam (GRE) Prep course, take the GRE and apply to graduate school
Stipend & Benefits
- Stipend of $11,064/year for two years (monthly stipend of $922)
- Students are required to work in the research laboratory 15 hours/week during the academic year and full time (40+ hours) in the summer. With this level of support, it is expected that students will not have to take on additional paid employment, thereby allowing students to focus their efforts toward academic success
- Paid UNM tuitions and fees (After all other scholarships and/or grants have been applied)
- Paid travel to scientific meeting! While scientific meetings, students will meet scientists and other students from around the country and learn about graduate school possibilities.
